Sr. Ruth has a number of programmes that addresses the sexual health questions of learners. She uses various teaching / discussion methods and makes the classes fun and informative. With Sr. Ruth, there is ‘no such thing as a stupid question’! Educators and counselors are included in the process to ensure transparency and give added input from a cultural or religious perspective when necessary.
Young Women’s Wisdom - Grade 7 or 8 (Girls)
A 2 to 2 ½ hour session that looks at puberty development, choices, a gender game (stereotypes), respectful relationships, sexuality related laws, pregnancy and STIs/HIV. It is fun, uses lots of visual objects and real life stories. Girls receive a handout that gives key information on each area discussed, as well as a space to write down some healthy habits that they plan to put into practice.
Grade 7, 8 & 9 (Comprehensive 1-day workshop)
The course is presented in 1 academic day to gender divided groups (over 2 days for grade 7). The grade is divided into groups (not more than 50) and spend one day with Sr Ruth. The teaching is divided into short lectures, interactive discussions, video footage and peer group discussion around questions of lifestyle, dating, sexual / romantic touch, assertiveness and sexual harassment, and STIs. Learners receive handouts or booklets that reinforce key learning areas and can be used in discussions with peers / partners. The school receives a comprehensive report.
All High School Grades - "Sexy Smarts" (90 - 120 min)
PowerPoint presentation that introduces sexuality generally and focuses on Human Sexual Response, dating, touch communication, sex and boundary setting, demonstration of condoms and practical information on contraception. Questions are answered if there is sufficient time.
